Welcome to Taishan Genealogy (taishanzupu.com, "the site"). These terms are the agreement between you and the site about using it. By browsing or using the site you accept them; please read them before you register. The site's Privacy Policy is part of these terms.
1. What the site offers
The site puts the printed genealogies of Taishan's villages online, one genealogy per village and surname, and offers free reading, name search, family charts, scans of the original books, PDF export and a Chinese script converter. Registered users can add to and correct a genealogy under that genealogy's review rules, and can start a new genealogy.
2. Your account
- Register with an email address you can receive mail at, and do not use a display name that impersonates someone else.
- Keep your password safe. Anything done with your account is treated as done by you. If someone else has used it, change your password at once and tell us.
- An account is for one person. Do not transfer it or lend it to anyone.
- The site may suspend an account that breaks these terms.
3. Access codes
Each genealogy's access code is given to family members by its administrators. It lets them see recent-generation members, and administrators may also allow it to be used to submit changes. Pass it on only to the relatives its administrators mean to have it, and never publish it. Do not repost, publish or compile into a directory anything about recent-generation members that you see with a code.
4. What you contribute
- The changes, people, biographies and sources you submit should be true and accurate as far as you know, and submitting them must not infringe anyone else's rights.
- Before adding or changing details of a living relative, ask them first, and ask a guardian for anyone under age. Do not submit personal information a genealogy does not need, such as phone numbers, addresses or identity document numbers.
- Once accepted, what you submit becomes part of that genealogy. You allow the site and the genealogy's administrators, free of charge, non-exclusively and permanently, to store, display, edit, copy and distribute it, including in PDFs and other exports, for the family to read. Other family members may correct it further.
- A genealogy's administrators may accept, reject or undo any change. What was transcribed from the original book is always kept, with corrections recorded beside it.
5. What you may not do
When using the site you may not:
- invent a line of descent, claim ancestors falsely, or knowingly enter false details;
- post anything insulting, defamatory, harassing or unlawful, or post advertising;
- expose other people's private information, or use personal information found here for anything but genealogy;
- try to get around the protection of recent-generation members, guess access codes, or use someone else's account;
- scrape the site in bulk with software, or otherwise interfere with its running.
6. The original books, and intellectual property
- The genealogies are transcribed from each village's printed genealogy. The original books and their scans belong to their compilers and the clans concerned. The site has digitised them for families to study and check.
- The site's software, design and arrangement of the data belong to the site.
- You are welcome to read and download the site's content for personal or family research, and to share it with relatives. Do not copy it in bulk or use it commercially without permission.
- If you believe something on the site infringes your rights, tell us through the Contact us page and we will act promptly once we have checked.
7. Genealogy administrators
- Whoever creates a genealogy is its administrator and may appoint others. System administrators may also appoint or remove a genealogy's administrators.
- Genealogy administrators are family members. They review changes, set the review rules and look after the access code, and so can see the display names and email addresses of the accounts involved. They may use those only to administer the genealogy.
- An administrator's decisions are a matter among the family and do not speak for the site. The site may remove an administrator who breaks these terms.
8. Disclaimer
- The genealogies come from old printed books and from users' contributions and may contain mistakes, such as misprints in the original and illegible characters. They are for reference only and are not proof of kinship, inheritance or any other legal matter.
- The site does its best to stay available and keep its data intact, but does not promise uninterrupted or error-free service. As far as the law allows, the site is not liable for loss caused by using it or by being unable to use it.
- The site may link to other websites and is not responsible for their content.
9. Changes to the service
The site may change, suspend or end some or all of its service, and will try to give notice on the site beforehand. You may stop using the site at any time and ask, through the Contact us page, to have your account deleted.
10. Changes to these terms
When these terms change, the new version is published on this page and the effective date at the top is updated. Continuing to use the site after a change takes effect means you accept the new terms.
11. Contact
For any question about these terms, leave a message on the Contact us page.
